Advancing Research in Shunts
STARS-kids is a 501(c)(3) public charity working to eliminate complications associated with hydrocephalus and shunts by funding vital research projects. STARS-kids is committed to raising awareness and funds for hydrocephalus and shunt research.
WE strive to ensure a brighter future for shunted children. We award grants directly to research institutions who request funds through proposals. We provide seed money for projects that generate data for larger grant opportunities.
Hydrocephalus and shunt research are grossly underfunded. Hydrocephalus affects approximately 1 in 500 children at birth and more from brain injury, tumor, or acquired causes. About 40,000 shunt related operations are performed every year in the US for hydrocephalus. 50% of shunts fail within the first two years of placement.
Although research is a worldwide endeavor, progress is slow because of limited funding. Currently, shunt research is principally privately funded. STARS-kids mission is to provide seed funding for qualified research project. Through generous private donations and fundraising events, STARS-kids has been able to provide seed grants to research institutions. Investigators are tackling fundamental but intricate issues that may lead to a greater understanding of hydrocephalus and the shunts used to treat it. We are please to report that since December of 2004, STARS-kids has awarded $327,000 to support seven different projects.
Current information on STARS-kids research is highlighted on our research page.
The volunteer members of STARS-kids are committed to finding and funding innovative research projects designed to improve the quality of life of shunted individuals. STARS-kids meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday. Contact us for meeting locations.
