Dear Friends and Family: I am writing to let everyone know about my most recent highly ambitious and slightly crazy endeavor; The Grand Rapids Marathon. It is slated for Sunday, October 16, 2011 with an 8AM start time. I am hoping to finish about five hours later. As a result of my grueling training schedule and the fact that we are amidst the building of our new house, I have decided to postpone the 5th Annual STARS-kids walkathon until next year. This has been a very difficult decision to make since the walkathon is always such a fun family event, but I truly believe it is best for everyone involved including STARS-kids. Since the walk is not going to take place this October and my first marathon experience is, I would like to ask you to support my marathon run with a donation to STARS! I want my run to make a difference for others too and the best way to make this happen is by raising funds and awareness for hydrocephalus! A donation will help my run be so much more than just a run. I will cover a total of 26.2 miles. I hope that you will consider pledging my efforts accordingly. Checks should be made out to STARS-kids. Every dollar counts and every donation is appreciated (and tax deductible). I may be the first shunted woman to attempt such a feat! If not the very first, I am certainly one of the pioneers in such a venture. I feel honored and lucky to be able to tackle such a major athletic endeavor after all of the medical struggles I faced nearly five years ago. Right after my surgery, I could not walk without being in pain. Now to think I am going to run a marathon in a couple months is truly incredible to me! I plan to continue living life to the fullest now that I have come to realize that there is no guarantee of tomorrow, just a guarantee that you need to enjoy the moment and appreciate each day as the gift that it is. I sure will be enjoying myself when I cross the finish line October 16th! Be there to support me! We plan to gather after the race for food and drinks at Hop Cat in Grand Rapids. If you plan to attend the celebration just bring your donation along with you, otherwise please mail it prior to the race if at all possible. Of course, as with most things, better late than never so if you find this letter in November while sorting through stacks of papers like I often do with things like this, just send me your check then! A tax deductible receipt will be mailed to you within two weeks. I hope to see you on race day! In the meantime, "It is not a matter of counting the days, but of making each day count". Love, Vern |
